As a culmination of the inaugural year of “The Name Of” residency, a space for Trans and Two-Spirit artists, we present to you our exhibition, hosted by Orchid Contemporary. This exhibition is curated by the residency founder, Maddie Alexander, and presents the work of 16 Trans and Two-Spirit Artists who participated in the 2026 year of the residency. This exhibition holds the collaborations and creations of these artists, after a week shared together in March of 2026 at Gibraltar Center for the Arts. Through this collaboration with Orchid Contemporary, a trans-led gallery, we present the power of giving space to trans artists to create collectively, share their own self determined spaces, and highlight the ways in which trans folks create and permeate visual culture. 



The Name Of is a one week residency held at Gibraltar Point Centre for the Arts, facilitated by multidisciplinary artist Maddie Alexander. This residency is for trans* artists, inclusive of all who fall under the gender diverse, Two-Spirit, Intersex, GNC, or Non-Binary experience. The intention of the residency is to foster a focused space for trans* artists to collaborate, share research, expand their networks, and nurture space to dig into their practice in new and explorative ways. 

Maddie Alexander (They/He) is a trans artist, archivist, and arts worker based in Halifax, NS. He holds a BFA from OCAD University (2016), and an MFA from NSCAD University (2020), where they received The Reznick Family Fund for Student Creativity. Their work has been exhibited locally and internationally, with participation in residencies such as CSAV– Artists' Research Laboratory at Fondazione Antonio Ratti (Como, Italy), and Vermont Studio Center (Vermont, USA). He was a 2025 AGO x RBC Emerging Artist-Researcher, as well as an Artist in Residence at the SPAO Photographic Arts Centre. His practice has been supported by Arts Nova Scotia, and the Canada Council for the Arts. https://www.maddie-alexander.com
